A warm welcome to Strawberry How Nursery School

An Ofsted Outstanding Private Day Nursery

PLEASE NOTE THE "NURSERY SPACES REMAINING' ICON TO THE LEFT

Strawberry How Nursery School in Cockermouth is a modern, purpose-built, day nursery that offers quality childcare and education within a warm, friendly and caring atmosphere for children aged 3 months to 5 years old. The nursery has recently benefited from a generous extension and we now offer spacious accommodation within three dedicated (0 - 18mths)(from Sept17) (19mth-36mths) (from Sept17) and (37-60mths) rooms together with a separate dining room and separate and secure free flow groundfloor play areas.

The Caterpillar Room 0-18mths (from Sept17) Places are limited and often booked well in advance.  This area occupies the new development and is composed of the main room, two activity rooms, a sleep room, an adjoining enclosed soft surface playground. There is access to the soft play area and the children use the lawned area in the warmer months. Staff ratio 1:3

The Butterfly Room 19-32 mths (from Sept17)  This is a new area and is composed of a dedicated set of rooms for this important age group. Our children have freeflow groundfloor access to outside play both undercover and onto the outside play areas. This will be a small group engaged in separate planned activities with a pupil to staff ratio higher than the Ofsted recommendation. Breakfast, Morning and Afternoon Snacks and Tea are provided within the fee.  Hot lunch is delivered from Lorton School.

The Squirrels Room (Pre-School) 33mths +  A slight change of emphasis sees our older children engage in high quality embedded play/learning EYFS activities for 50 weeks/yr.  Here literacy and numeracy activities take place daily.  Again, within a modern building our children have freeflow access to covered and open outside playspaces, indeed, our children generally have access to more experiences because their day is always longer than 3hrs. Ofsted were particularly impressed by the high quality of our planned activities that always include a broad range of outside visits. We are proud of the work that we do in this area.  Breakfast, Morning and Afternoon snacks and tea are provided.  Hot lunch is delivered from Lorton School.

Our Day Nursery is open between 7.30am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday daily for 50 weeks of the year.  We are registered to care for children aged 0 - 5 years.  We have the highest accreditation from Cumbria Childrens Services and we were not only recognised by Ofsted to be "Outstanding" within the new EYFS but rather Ofsted classed us as "exceptional".  Our 16 staff are all fully qualified to NVQ3 although two have degrees and three are qualified teachers. Nine of our staff are mothers themselves. Our staff are all full time and this means our children see the same adults each day.

Our nursery is managed by Mrs Julie Richardson an experienced Early Years Headteacher. She also continuously manages the professional training of our staff. Ofsted commended our nursery on it's dedicated approach to offering extensive educational experiences that went beyond the requirements of the EYFS. Our Caterpillar Room for children aged less than 19mths has dedicated facilities and specifically trained staff (who only want to work with babies) appropriate to such care. Our staffing ratios are always higher than that recommended by Ofsted who, it should be said, specifically commented on the happiness of our children.
